Working with regional universities and technical institutes to upskill regular students and unemployed mining workers has seen MICROMINE’s Brazilian partner, BNA Consultoria e Sistemas Ltda (BNA), awarded the prestigious “Medalha de Mérito Padre José Mendes Barros” from the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Minas Gerais-Brazil (IFMG).
Belo Horizonte-based BNA has partnered with leading mining solutions software provider MICROMINE to deliver high-tech geological engineering applications in the exploration and mineral sector in Latin America. In addition to working with mining companies to implement MICROMINE’s solutions, the partners have also teamed up with local universities to provide training in the Micromine exploration and mine design solution for unemployed mining technicians and those aspiring to work in the industry.
“Since October 2012, BNA and MICROMINE have supported the IFMG’s education and training program which aims to upskill regular students and unemployed mining technicians with hands-on experience using the latest solutions so that they can find employment within the industry again, while also offering software-specific training for those new to mining,” said Principal Consultant BNA, Dr. Beck Nader
“Candidates for the external Micromine course at IFMG need to pass a selection test before they are admitted to the free course. Once they have graduated, they are well-versed in the Micromine solution and sought-after within the industry. In fact, several graduates have been employed by BNA, including Marriely Ferreira who impressed so much she was hired as a trainée to work specifically with Micromine software.”
In 2012, IFMG – Campus Ouro Preto became the first technical education institution in Brazil to acquire the Micromine software licence. The “Mine Planning with Micromine Software” course is run by Professor Amilton Bernardino da Silva Fiho with support from BNA. The students learn to use all functions of the Micromine solution – Core, Exploration, Wireframing, Resource Estimation, Mining and Scheduling. To date, 100 students have graduated from the course. On 17 May 2019, BNA was bestowed with IFMG’s highest honour – the Medalha de Mérito Padre José Mendes Barros – for services to the school in supporting students’ intensive use of the Micromine solution.
The Medal of Merit, named after emeritus professor Father Mendes in recognition of his lifetime commitment to education, is awarded to individuals, companies, institutions and alumni who have contributed to the strengthening and promotion of the school and to the development of the region. “This award is very gratifying as it denotes our [BNA and MICROMINE] mutual commitment to the education of the youth generation and the application of the highest technology into their mining studies” said Dr Beck Nader.
MICROMINE, which has formed partnerships with several educational institutions and mining companies in Brazil, is proud of the recognition the award bestows on its commitment to education and training.
“We are extremely proud to form alliances with world-class educational institutions. The sophistication of our mining solution technology is helping to ensure that the mine technicians of tomorrow are well-prepared to meet the mine design and planning needs of the industry today and into the future,” added Mr Nader.
